Heba Shaban
Biography
Heba Shaban is a Professor of Wireless Communications with the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering at Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport (AASTMT), Alexandria, Egypt. She is the co-founder and current director of the Wireless Communications and Networks Research Group (WiNCG) at AASTMT.
Shaban received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees (with honors) in Electronics and Communications Engineering from Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport (AASTMT). She received the Ph.D. degree from the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech. In addition to her academic and research pursuits, Shaban is an IEEE volunteer, and has been involved in various initiatives aimed at supporting and encouraging students in STEM fields. She has been part of programs that engage pre-university students, teachers, parents, university students, IEEE volunteers and professionals.
Shaban is a Senior Member of IEEE, IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology (EMBS), IEEE Communications Society and Education Society, and a Senior member of URSI. Furthermore, Shaban has held leadership positions within the global IEEE community. She has been a member of the IEEE-Educational Activities Pre-University Education Coordination Committee (PECC) since 2022, and an IEEE STEM Champion, formally known as STEM ambassador, since 2021. She also serves as a member of the IEEE-HKN Advisor Development & Support (ADS) subcommittee. She joined the IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu (IEEE-HKN) Society in 2018 as the founding Faculty Advisor of Mu Beta Chapter, the first IEEE-HKN Chapter in Egypt and Africa, and has been serving as the Faculty Advisor of the Chapter since then. In 2020, the Mu Beta Chapter initiated a STEM outreach program called Mu Beta Kidzineers. Since installation, Mu Beta Chapter received multiple awards namely, the Key Chapter Recognition five times, and the Outstanding Chapter Award five times in a row. Mu Beta Kidzineers STEM outreach program won the IEEE Region 8 Acceleration Contest in 2021 and 2024 (Pre-Education Category), which aims to promote educational activities among IEEE volunteers and IEEE entities in Region 8, and targets outstanding contributions and innovative initiatives in pre-university, university and continuing education.
