Biography
Elizabeth Alves is a passionate Humanitarian with over 20 years of experience in education, specializing in integrating STEM concepts for students of all abilities. Her expertise spans general and special education, with a focus on supporting neuro-diverse learners and the under-resourced.
As an active affiliate leader of the Learning Disabilities Association (LDA), Elizabeth advocates for individuals with learning disabilities and their right to equitable STEM education. Her work with LDA has involved developing resources, conducting workshops, and contributing to policy recommendations that promote a standard of practice and can contribute to the diversification of STEM Outreach.
Elizabeth’s commitment to advancing STEM education extends to her involvement with IEEE and its TryEngineering initiative. Through this platform, she has developed and shared innovative curricula that introduce engineering concepts to K-12 students, with a particular emphasis on making these materials accessible to students with diverse learning needs. She is a member of the Pre University Coordinating Committee and her participation in several working groups provides detailed experience in marketing, evaluations, and content creation.
Her comprehensive K-8 program incorporates STEM for students with learning and emotional disabilities, meeting or exceeding public school standards. Elizabeth’s approach demonstrates how tailored STEM instruction can positively impact all students, especially those with learning differences.
